Queensland tourism workforce crisis resilience and recovery strategy
The COVID-19 pandemic had unprecedented impacts on Queensland’s tourism industry, leading to various workforce challenges.
Funded by the Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland scheme, this project, led by Dr. Richard Robinson from The University of Queensland in partnership with QTIC, developed recovery and resilience strategies through consultations with employees, operators, and stakeholders. The outcome is the Queensland tourism workforce crisis resilience and recovery strategy, a plan designed to support staged recovery and prepare for future external shocks.
QTIC workforce priorities report
Revitalising tourism requires attracting and retaining an experienced workforce. As such, managing labour and skills shortages is a priority for Queensland’s tourism industry and QTIC.
Developed in consultation with industry, this report investigates key workforce priorities, training friction points, and the effectiveness of current investment in workforce and training programs. The report recommends enhancing hospitality apprenticeships, promoting tourism careers, engaging First Nations peoples, and strengthening workforce support to ensure the industry’s long-term success.

Tourism digital workforce and development training plan
Constant change is challenging, with new developments and technologies emerging daily. Businesses, especially those in the consumer-focused tourism industry, must adapt to digital disruption, a key factor in global competition. With support from the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training, QTIC partnered with Griffith University to assess digital disruptions impact on tourism and identified skill and workforce needs.
This report, based on input from QTIC members across Queensland, aims to help the industry, government, and operators stay ahead of the competition.
