QTIC CEO Brett Fraser pays tribute to Sir Frank Moore

Sir Frank Moore

Today, we share the sad news that our friend and a prominent legend of the tourism industry, Sir Frank Moore, passed away on Thursday morning. We mourn the loss of a revered and much-loved professional, mentor and colleague.

Widely renowned as the father of Queensland tourism, Sir Frank’s numerous contributions and stalwart leadership over the past four decades were instrumental in shaping the growth and direction of our nation’s tourism industry.

During his distinguished career, Sir Frank played a key role in securing Queensland’s successful nomination to host World Expo 88 in Brisbane. He was also pivotal in establishing what would later become Tourism and Events Queensland when his leadership of a 1978 Queensland Government inquiry led to the creation of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation, which he chaired from its inception in 1978 until 1990.

Overseeing a period of tremendous growth and prosperity within Queensland’s tourism industry, Sir Frank went on to chair the Australian Tourism Industry Association and the Australian Tourism Research Institute. His leadership was crucial in securing major investments in tourism research and education at the tertiary level – a legacy that continues to advance tourism in Australia. Frank had a passion for research, he commissioned the first tourism forecasting model for the Asia Pacific Region and was instrumental in establishing the National Centre for Studies in Travel and Tourism, the first dedicated tourism research centre of its kind in Australia and the appointment of the first Professor of Tourism in Australia.

Sir Frank’s illustrious career also saw him serve as chair of the Federal Government’s Tourism Forecasting Council, Nature Resorts Limited, Advent Tourism Fund Management Ltd, and Great Southern Railway. He was a founding director of Jupiters Limited and a director of the Gold Coast Airport Corporation.

Throughout his life, Sir Frank held a deep interest in community affairs, particularly in the tourism industry’s role in driving economic growth and job creation. He was guided by a passion for developing tourism products and management practices that prioritise environmental and social responsibility. He was an early advocate for building a sustainable tourism industry that benefits both society and the environment.

In 1983, Sir Frank was recognised for his contributions to community and the tourism industry when he was made a Knight Bachelor and was later appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1991.

While many of us knew Sir Frank personally, for those who did not have the privilege of meeting this industry titan, his legacy and impact will continue to shape the future of Australian tourism and inspire the success of our industry for generations to come. He will be deeply missed by all.

We celebrate Sir Frank’s life and the indelible mark he has left upon our tourism landscape.

Thank you, Sir Frank, your legacy lives on.

Kind regards,
Brett Fraser
